The Year of the Contrarian King
June 11, 2012 to June 25, 2013
“Fairest Cordelia, that art most rich, being poor;
Most choice, forsaken; and most loved, despised!”
King Lear by William Shakespeare
What does a Contrarian King look like and what does this passage of Jupiter in Gemini mean for us Earth-people? In the astrology I practice, Shamanic Astrology, Jupiter is the planet of expansion and amplification of the sign that it is in (generally-speaking). On a person’s astrology chart, it pertains to “the fastest path to their life purpose.” So, for the next 12 months, our path winds through the contrarian, shape-shifting energy wisdom of Gemini.
Gemini is the archetype of the Fool, Jester or Comedian. In Shamanic Astrology, Gemini is one of 4 “In Service to Spirit” signs. Gemini serves spirit by its display of radical wisdom in the contrary forms of communication or way of being. The fool can speak the truth and comment in situations that can cut through the pleasantries or heaviness of conversations and provide and “out of bounds” unique perspective while also sharing the wisdom of the moment.
Jupiter becomes the Contrarian King for the next 12 months and the foolish wisdom of the moment becomes the path for which the world moves. Joy in the impromptu dance and rhymes of the day, the craziness of Starlight Parade in Portland, Oregon and the Holi festival of Hinduism all fall in line in helping the world spin backwards and sideways when it’s needed.
Tune into the Contrarian King by seeing him in the early morning sky before sunrise. Look to the east near the much brighter planet Venus (also in Gemini as the Trickster Goddess) and honor him with a dance, poem or a backwards walk in the park. Get serious with the humor and break the tension of a board meeting. This year, the path to enlightenment falls upward, spins on a flying submarine and lives on the wings of a cactus.
