VESTA – Is it Really an Asteroid?

This is an intriguing article on the NASA website that gives details about the NASA Dawn mission to visit Vesta to determine whether Vesta is an asteroid or a new type of minor planet.  Scientists believe Vesta is a protoplanet, a planet which never fully formed at the creation of the solar system.

 

NASA Probe Successfully Orbiting Mercury – A First

From National Geographic, the Messenger spacecraft achieves orbit of Mercury.  This is the first time any probe has done this.  The mission will last a year and map the entire surface of 1st planet from the sun.  Messenger will also study the magnetic interaction with the sun.

 

New Horizons Spacecraft passes orbit of Uranus on the way to Pluto

Launched in 2006, the NASA probe New Horizons has crossed the orbit of Pluto on March 19th for a July, 2015 rendevous with the demoted dwarf planet.  Story on Space.com.
