The ringed planet has finally awakened from its journey behind the Sun, now just becoming visible to us on planet Earth.  Saturn has spent Saturn from Belowabout one month in the glare of the Sun, hidden from our eyes.  The ancients considered this to be an underworld passage where a planet/deity was undergoing transformation.  For the outer planets, this happens every year, and in Saturn’s case, its third and last time (in 30 years) in the sign of Scorpio and constellation of the Scales.

In Shamanic Astrology, we use a 15 degree orb (exception is Venus) when checking to see if a given planet is in the “underworld”, meaning hidden in the glare of the Sun.  Other than Venus, the planets generally cannot be seen when they orbit closer than 15 degrees to the Sun (note: Ultimately, it depends on your horizon line, urban lighting and moisture, so it can be possible to see Saturn closer to 10 degrees if you are in the right environment).  This 3rd time around the back of the Sun signals the ending phase of Saturn’s journey in a given sign, generally-speaking.  In this case, it is now emerging from the shadow, transformed at 28 degrees Scorpio, and reaching to explore a new archetypal energy: Sagittarius (officially enters Sagittarius on the morning of December 23rd, Pacific time).

You’ll be able to see Saturn as it rises in the early morning sky in the east at 6:30am (Pacific time) or wherever you are about 45-60 minutes before sunrise.  It will be a dim, yellowish light on the southeastern horizon in the faint twilight of the morning.

  • Leaves the Underworld Dec 4, 2014 (Officially)
